Spring Resistance

Spring resistance is the system of adjustable springs on Pilates machines (reformer, Megaformer, xformer) that provides scalable load for exercises by adding or removing springs to change tension.

Reviewed July 22, 2026. Product-specific terminology is labeled explicitly; equipment specifications and pricing should be verified with the manufacturer.

What is Spring Resistance?

Spring resistance is a loading mechanism used on equipment such as reformers, Megaformers, and xformers. Springs of different rated tensions can be attached or removed to change carriage resistance. Spring force generally increases as a spring is stretched, while the resistance felt by a person also depends on machine geometry, carriage direction, exercise position, and manufacturer specifications. Color systems and recommended settings are not universal across equipment brands.

Key points

  • Adjustable springs provide scalable resistance on Pilates machines
  • Springs are color-coded by tension level
  • Variable resistance throughout range of motion
  • Configurations expressed as sequences (e.g., "2 red, 1 blue")
  • Effective for both rehabilitation and high-intensity training

Frequently asked questions

How does spring resistance work?

Springs attach to the carriage or frame and create tension as they lengthen. Adding or removing springs changes the system, but the load a person feels also depends on equipment design, direction, leverage, and body position.

What spring settings should I use for beginners?

Beginners typically start with lighter spring settings to focus on form, alignment, and core engagement before progressing to heavier resistance. Exact settings depend on the machine, exercise, and individual. Instructors adjust springs per student during class.
